Indian edition of apostolic letter ‘Totum Amorist Est’ released

“Totum Amoris Est” or “Love is Everything” marks the fourth centenary of the death of St Francis de Sales

An Indian edition of Pope Francis’ apostolic letter “Totum Amoris Est” on the fourth centenary of the death of Saint Francis de Sales, patron of journalists and communicators, was released on January 16.

The event, which was attended by Monsignor Wolfgang Huber, president of the international Catholic mission society Missio, was held at the general secretariat of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) in Bangalore.

The first copy of the book was presented to Father Baptist Pais, SVD, executive secretary of the CCBI Commission for Ecumenism in the presence of Father Stephen Alathara, deputy secretary general of CCBI and British theologian Peter Purdue.

This apostolic letter prompts a revisiting of the works of St Francis de Sales that have inspired generations to reflect on faith, hope, and charity.

“Totum Amoris Est” or “Love is Everything” marks the fourth centenary of the death of St Francis de Sales, bishop of Geneva, who was declared a Doctor of the Church and patron of journalists and communicators.

Pope Francis issued the apostolic letter where he recalls how the Doctor of the Church was able to help people seek God in charity, joy, and freedom in an era of great changes.

The pope described the saint as a fine “interpreter” of his time, who in a new way had “a thirst for God,” and was an “extraordinary director of souls,” capable of helping people seek the Lord in their hearts and find Him in charity.

Pope Francis highlights that the great vocation of the French saint, who was born in the castle of Sales, in Savoy, on August 21, 1567, and died in Lyon on 28 December 1622, was that of asking himself “in every situation in life where the greatest love is to be found.”
