China’s Tangshan Catholic community celebrates ‘Year of Spirituality’

The celebration will act as a "red thread" in the ecclesial path of the Catholic community

The Catholic community of Tangshan in the Chinese province of Hebei is celebrating 2023 as the “Year of Spirituality.”

The celebration will act as a “red thread” in the ecclesial path of the Catholic community, read a report on the Italian news agency, Fides.

The report said Catholics have to experience “church fellowship and thereby revive the apostolic zeal of the community.”

The decision to dedicate the year to spirituality was based on suggestions made by the laity.

“The gratitude of the community for the commitment with which parish priests spiritually accompanied the community during the lockdowns caused by the pandemic was also fundamental,” added the Fides report.

Among the activities proposed in the coming months are:

  • Retreats (inspired by the writings of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint Teresa of Lisieux)
  • Lauds and Vespers
  • Eucharistic Adoration
  • Rosary
  • participation in the Sacraments
  • Bible meditations

In case a surge of Covid-19 cases occurs, some of the initiatives will be done using social media networks and digital platforms.
