Catholic Priest in India arrested for allegedly trying to convert people to faith

Father Joseph Amudakani was arrested in Thandla, Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh on January 18. He was released on the same day.

A Catholic priest in the Diocese of Jhabua in India was arrested for allegedly trying to convert people into the faith.

Father Joseph Amudakani was arrested in Thandla, Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India, on January 18. He was released on the same day.

A report on Radio Veritas Asia said the priest, along with a nun and a catechist, went to a village on that day to celebrate Mass.

“As they were preparing to return after the Mass, some Hindu fundamentalists gathered around them and snatched the Missal and Rosary,” said the RVA report.

Police from the town of Thandla later came and took Father Amudakani into custody.

Christians in neighboring areas who heard the news went to the police station to demand the release of the priest, the report quoted a certain Father Rocky of the Diocese of Jhabua.

Members of Legislative Assembly also appealed to the police to release the priest.
