Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar, in a homily during the Feast of Our Lady of Velankanni on September 8, urged the faithful to seek peace, healing, and unity amid the nation’s ongoing challenges.
The prelate called on the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, praying for Myanmar’s health and prosperity.
“May the Queen of Peace, whom we honor today, bring everlasting peace to Myanmar. She is the mother of all afflicted and suffering. She knows our suffering and we seek her intervention today,” he said.
He reflected on his recent pilgrimage to the Velankanni Shrine in India, which he described as a time of “profound spiritual renewal.” During his visit, he prayed for the people of Myanmar.
“Even now, thousands gather at the Velankanni Shrine, seeking her miraculous touch. She is revered by people of all faiths, for she is the intercessor who pleads with her Son, just as she did at the wedding feast in Cana,” Cardinal Bo said.
He also reflected on Mary’s life in the Gospel, connecting her example to the struggles of Myanmar. Cardinal Bo pointed to the ‘Magnificat’, where Mary proclaims God’s justice for the poor and oppressed.
“Mary’s Magnificat reminds us that God is ever mindful of the lowly, and He works powerfully to lift the downtrodden,” he said.
The cardinal called for compassion and service, encouraging the faithful to follow Mary’s example, saying, “Whether through material assistance, comforting words, or simply by being present with those who are anxious, we can embody Mary’s spirit of service in our lives.”
He acknowledged the challenges faced by mothers in Myanmar, many of whom are affected by conflict and displacement.
He emphasized the need for prayer and sought comfort for these mothers through the intercession of Mary, who, as he pointed out, stood by her Son during His suffering on the Cross.
Cardinal Bo also urged the faithful to place their trust in Mary’s intercession, especially during difficult times.
He conveyed that those who seek her help are met with blessings and miracles, offering hope and reassurance in the face of adversity.
As the Feast of Our Lady of Velankanni, known as the “Lourdes of the East,” is celebrated, the cardinal reminded the faithful of the hope it brings to many in Myanmar.
He concluded with a call for prayers, asking for Mary’s intercession to bring peace, justice, and well-being to the nation.
