Cardinal Goh: Papal visit ignites faith, unity, and hope in Singapore

Cardinal William Goh expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for rekindling the flame of the Catholic faith “even more brightly” in Singapore during the pontiff’s 45th Apostolic Journey.

After the Papal Mass at the National Stadium on Sept. 12, Cardinal Goh highlighted the profound impact of the papal visit on the Catholic community, as well as on the broader Singaporean society.

The prelate said the visit has, “without doubt, fanned the flame of our faith to shine even more brightly in us.”

“In the spirit of unity and hope, I pray that this faith will continue to grow more and more in us each day, so we can work together for the renewal of the Church, to be credible and powerful witnesses of the love and truth of the Gospel in our families, schools, workplaces, and society,” he added.

He referred to the Pope as a symbol of “mercy, compassion, and goodness of Christ, the Good Shepherd,” noting that “Catholics find hope and inspiration to work together for the unity of humanity” through Pope Francis’ leadership.

Cardinal Goh praised the Pope’s efforts in advocating for the marginalized, including “refugees, and victims of war and migration,” and in promoting peace.

“You lead us in mercy and compassion, and showed yourself to be a true prophet, speaking on behalf of the voiceless,” he said, commending the Pope’s commitment to seeking peace through “dialogue and justice.”

Highlighting Pope Francis’ work in fostering interreligious dialogue, the Cardinal expressed admiration for the Pope’s outreach to other faiths.

“You have led the way in promoting unity in the world by reaching out to other religions through dialogue and mutual respect and appreciation,” Cardinal Goh said, calling the Church a “place where everyone is welcome, especially sinners who fail to live up to the Gospel life.”

The Cardinal also reflected on Pope Francis’ commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change, noting that “the world understands why it is so important to safeguard ecology and the planet” thanks to the Pope’s leadership.

Cardinal Goh further emphasized the significance of the Eucharistic celebration, describing it as the “highlight of your pastoral visit,” which “unites us in faith and love” under Pope Francis’ spiritual guidance.

He expressed hope that the visit would inspire the local Catholic community to walk the path of “synodality and dialogue” and to embody the values of “love and mercy, compassion and justice, and inclusiveness.”
