The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) expressed profound grief following the death of Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, a prominent theologian and the founder of Liberation Theology.
Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the CCBI, described his passing as a significant loss not only for the Church but also for the global community advocating for justice, peace, and human dignity.
In a statement released by the CCBI General Secretariat, Cardinal Ferrão praised Fr. Gutiérrez’s lifelong commitment to the poor and marginalized.
“Fr. Gutiérrez’s departure is a tremendous loss, not only to the Church but also to the global community committed to justice, peace, and human dignity,” the prelate said.
He emphasized the influential work of Fr. Gutiérrez, particularly his book, A Theology of Liberation, which introduced the Church to a vision of Christ deeply embedded in the lives of the oppressed.
The Cardinal further acknowledged the impact of Fr. Gutiérrez’s theological contributions, underscoring how they remain rooted in the Gospel and the lived reality of marginalized communities.
“His theology, deeply rooted in the Gospel and lived reality, called us to a deeper understanding of God’s preferential option for the poor. He urged the world to confront structures of injustice and to walk in solidarity with those who are voiceless and vulnerable,” Cardinal Ferrão said.
Cardinal Ferrão emphasized the prophetic impact of Fr. Gutiérrez’s teachings, which shaped the Church’s mission and deepened its understanding of solidarity.
“Fr. Gutiérrez was a prophetic figure of our times,” he said. “His teachings profoundly shaped the Church’s mission and renewed its commitment to solidarity and service. His legacy will inspire countless believers to strive for a more just and compassionate world.”
The CCBI’s statement also conveyed Cardinal Ferrão’s condolences to Fr. Gutiérrez’s family, friends, and all those influenced by his work. “We pray that the Lord grants him eternal rest, and may his prophetic voice continue to resonate with all who seek justice and peace,” the Cardinal expressed.
Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, who passed away recently, was widely regarded as a leading figure in Liberation Theology—a movement that emphasizes the Church’s responsibility to side with the oppressed and work towards systemic change.
His legacy remains influential in theological and social justice circles worldwide.
