Pope Francis names Cardinals Tagle, Bo members of Congregation for Divine Worship

The Asian cardinals will now be part of the office that deals with the promotion and regulation of the Liturgy and of the sacraments

Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon, as members of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

In a Bulletin released on Wednesday, June 1, the Vatican announced that the Asian cardinals, together with South Korean Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, will now be part of the office that deals with the promotion and regulation of the Liturgy and of the sacraments.

The congregation is headed by cardinal-elect Arthur Roche.

The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is the congregation of the Roman Curia that handles most affairs relating to liturgical practices of the Latin Church as distinct from the Eastern Catholic Churches and some technical matters relating to the sacraments.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Tagle expressed hope that Filipinos will be known all over the world for their faith in a gathering of Filipinos at St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York on Wednesday.

“I hope that the Filipinos everywhere will be known as someone who treasures the gift of faith, you are someone who treasures the gift of the church, let that be the mark of every Filipino Christian,” said the cardinal.

Cardinal Tagle led the closing ceremony of the celebration in the United States of the quincentennial of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines.
