Indian nuns launch book on struggle against archdiocese, congregation

The book tells the story of the struggle of a group of six nuns against their own congregation and Church officials over ownership of a school

A group of Catholic nuns launched a book this week on their struggle against an archdiocese in India and against their own congregation.

The book titled “My Prophetic Struggle, The Narakkal Story,” is written jointly by Carmelite Sister Annie Jaise and theologian Kochurani Abraham. It was released on Sunday, June 26, by Sister Elsa Muttathu, national secretary of the Conference of Religious of India.

The book tells the story of the struggle by a group of six nuns, including the author, who belonged to the Amala province of the Congregation of Mother Carmel.

The nuns struggled to regain the ownership of Little Flower Girls High School from the Narakkal parish, which had allegedly forged documents with the help of some officers of the Education department.

Officials of the Carmelite congregation who initially supported the nuns reportedly turned against them later because of pressure from the bishops and the clergy. Church leaders even tried to dismiss the nuns from the congregation.

The six sisters faced humiliations and persecutions with courage and determination and brought the case before the courts.

At the end, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the school belongs to the Narakkal convent.
