Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, as one of the members of the Section for Fundamental Issues of Evangelization in the World (New Evangelization) of the Dicastery for Evangelization on April 25.
The Section, which is headed by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, is responsible for overseeing the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025, also known as the “Holy Year.”
Cardinal Ferrão was appointed as member of the Dicastery for Evangelization on Oct. 7, 2022. Pope Francis elevated Cardinal Ferrão as cardinal on Aug. 27, 2022, and was named as the cardinal-priest of Santa Maria in Via.
Cardinal Ferrão was born on Jan. 20, 1953, and was ordained priest on Oct. 28, 1979.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman on Dec. 20, 1993, and received the Episcopal Ordination on April 10, 1994.
On Dec. 12, 2003, he was appointed Archbishop of Goa and Daman and Patriarch “ad honorem” of the East Indies and installed on March 21, 2004.
He was elected as president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India during its 31st Plenary Assembly in 2019 in Chennai.
