A Catholic archbishop in India joined calls for the country’s Supreme Court to create an agency that will monitor attacks on Christians.
Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore joined the National Solidarity Forum and the Evangelical Fellowship of India who earlier petitioned the court to address widespread attacks against Christians in the country.
The groups wanted the Supreme Court to supervise criminal investigations taking in “troubled spots” after the federal government refuted reports about the attacks.
The government earlier denied that persecution of Christians has taken place, and alleged that the petition relied on baseless and unverified reports.
The petitioners disputed the government, saying that the state machinery has failed in taking immediate and necessary actions against groups that caused widespread violence.
The petitioners expressed lack of confidence with the government and requested for a retired Supreme Court judge to head the monitoring agency.
Achbishop Machado and the other petitioners noted that the attacks on Christians increased after the Supreme Court ordered in 2022 states to file compliance reports.
