Br. Johan Bosco Kong Somony became the first Cambodian native ordained as a Deacon, marking a significant event for the Salesian Mission in Cambodia.
The ceremony was conducted at the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians in Parañaque City, Philippines, by Archbishop Francesco Panfilo, SDB, retired prelate of Rabaul.
The ordination included Br. Francis Sau Din from Myanmar, Br. Maeko Verano Diaz from the Philippines, and Fransisco Kherubin Nuwa from Indonesia.
Originating from Pursat city in central Cambodia, Br. Somony moved to Phnom Penh to further his education at Don Bosco Technical School.
There, he developed his automotive skills and engaged deeply in the school’s weekly oratories. Choosing to dedicate his life to education over a professional career, he taught at Don Bosco and later at Don Bosco Poipet.
His commitment to his faith and educational work led him to join the Salesian Congregation, with the support of Fr. John Visser, the rector.
This ordination not only signifies a personal milestone for Br. Somony but also highlights his future leadership in the Cambodian Catholic community, according to the Salesian community in Cambodia.
The ordination ceremony was attended by a Cambodian delegation led by Fr. Eugene Xalxo, along with Fr. Roel Soto, Fr. Joseph Khoa, Sr. Juanita Navel, and other representatives from the Cambodian Salesian Family and youth ministry.
