Cardinal Bo reflects on ‘profound growth’ as FABC president, welcomes new leadership

Cardinal Charles Bo described his tenure as President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) as “one of profound growth, learning, and shared commitment” as he bid farewell after six years of service.

In his farewell message to fellow cardinals, bishops, priests, and collaborators, Cardinal Bo reflected on the collective achievements and challenges faced by the FABC under his leadership.

“Over the past six years, I have been deeply guided by the wisdom and sagacity of our senior members, particularly Cardinal Oswald Gracias, whose counsel and spiritual leadership have illuminated our path,” he said.

The cardinal credited the contributions of key figures, including Bishop Allwyn D’Silva, Cardinal David Pablo, and Fr. William LaRousse, for helping navigate complex challenges and implement crucial initiatives.

Their collaboration, he noted, had strengthened the organization’s ability to address the needs of the Church in Asia.

Highlighting the ongoing synodal journey as a major accomplishment, Cardinal Bo described it as a process that has fostered “collaboration, dialogue, and mutual understanding,” enabling the FABC to discern its shared vision and purpose.

“We have engaged in meaningful conversations that have led to concrete actions in many areas, ensuring that our faith remains vibrant and relevant in the contemporary world,” he said.

Despite the progress, Cardinal Bo pointed to unresolved challenges, particularly within the FABC-Office of Social Communications (OSC) and Radio Veritas Asia (RVA).

He expressed concern over the resignations of Cardinal Francis Sebastian as Chairperson of FABC-OSC and Fr. George Plathottam as Executive Secretary, calling for an in-depth examination of the situation.

“It signals that we need a deeper examination without fear and without polarization the current situation of FABC-OSC/RVA,” he remarked, framing the situation as “a healthy conflict” in the words of Pope Francis.

Cardinal Bo welcomed Cardinal Phillip Neri as the incoming president of the FABC, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the organization forward.

“His intellectual prowess, social acumen, and prophetic leadership qualities are truly inspiring,” Cardinal Bo said.

He added that Cardinal Neri’s leadership would “usher in a new era of progress and impact, furthering the work we have commenced and expanding our reach in ways beyond our current imagination.”

Cardinal Bo expressed gratitude to the FABC community for their support during his tenure. “Your unwavering dedication, creative contributions, and prayers and support have been instrumental in the success of this journey,” he said.

“With the close of this year, I extend my warmest wishes for a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May this season of peace, joy, and reflection bring renewed strength and hope to you and our faithful,” he added.
