The Vatican announced on Tuesday, December 28, the appointment of Bishop Peter Michiaki Nakamura as the archbishop of Nagasaki in Japan.
Pope Francis has earlier accepted the resignation of Archbishop Joseph Mitsuaki Takami.
Bishop Nakamura has previously served as auxiliary Bishop of Nagasaki and was titular bishop of Fessei.
He was born on March 21, 1962, in Saikai-city, Nagasaki prefecture.
He first studied at the Minor Seminary in Nagasaki and then he studied philosophy and theology at the Saint Sulpice Major Seminary in Fukuoka.
He obtained a license in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy in Rome (1991-1994). He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1988, for the Archdiocese of Nagasaki.
After his priestly ordination, he was a formator at the Minor Seminary of the Archdiocese of Nagasaki (1988-1989 and 1994-1999) and vicar of the parish of Nakamachi (1989-1991).
He was also vicar of the cathedral parish of Urakami (1999-2002) and pastor of the parishes of Togitsu (2002-2005) and Uematsu (2007-2014).
From 2005 to 2007, he was a trainer at the Fukuoka Major Seminary. Since 2009, he has been teaching moral theology at the major seminaries of Fukuoka and Tokyo.
