A court in Karnataka in southern India spared a Catholic bishop from facing police inquiry into a land dispute.
The Sessions Court in Chikmagalur noted that the accusation against Bishop Thomasappa Anthony Swamy and a Catholic priest was false.
A group of priests and lay people earlier accused the prelate and Father A Shantharaj of selling a property attached to a church-run school.
V T Thomas, the prelate’s lawyer, challenged the case, saying the plot in dispute was “never sold” and no manipulation of documents had been done.
The lawyer told the court that the case filed against the bishop and the priest was “fabricated and without evidence.”
