Catholic women in India urge bishops to foster peace, not strife

The statement decries the pronouncement of Bishop Joseph Kallarangattu of Palai who earlier warned against “narcotic jihad, love jihad”

A group of Catholic women in India had expressed “deep concern” over a recent statement by a Catholic bishop that, according to the women’s group, threatens communal harmony in the country.

A statement endorsed by 89 Catholic women from across India urges the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India and its Kerala unit to take special steps to foster peace and avoid strife.

The statement decries the pronouncement of Bishop Joseph Kallarangattu of Palai who earlier warned against the so-called “narcotic jihad, love jihad.”

In a homily on September 8, the bishop quoted statements of a former state police chief who said Kerala had become a recruiting center of Islamic terrorists.

The prelate said the terrorists want to “promote their religion” and to see “the end of non-Muslims” for which they used “loved jihad” and “narcotic jihad.”
