Pope Francis urges young people to champion fraternity

Pope Francis has called on young individuals to embrace the ideals of fraternity and dream big, as he marked the U.N. International Youth Day on August 12.

The Pope’s message, shared on his X social media platform, urged youth to cultivate a culture of care and become champions of fraternity.

“Dear young people, never lose your courage to dream big and to live life completely! Adopt the culture of care and spread it. Become champions of fraternity. Face life’s challenges by letting yourselves be guided by God and by good counselors. #YouthDay,” the pontiff tweeted.

The theme for this year’s International Youth Day, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” underscores the significance of a green transition in economies.

This transition aims for an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly global paradigm.

According to the U.N., this shift demands making life and work decisions that avoid negative environmental impacts.

While the importance of green skills spans all age groups, the U.N. underlines the heightened significance for younger generations who can contribute to a greener transition for a more extended period.

Ahead of International Youth Day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres released a statement calling for accelerated action on global challenges.

He acknowledged the solidarity of young people with vulnerable communities, stressing their role in pursuing “social, economic, and climate justice, and peace and prosperity for all”.

Guterres also appealed to older generations to ensure that young individuals have access to the necessary skills to make a positive impact on economies and the world. – with reports from Vatican News
