Yangon Archdiocese holds follow-up synod to strengthen church renewal

The Archdiocese of Yangon is holding the second follow-up to its 2004 Synod from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1, 2025, at the Parish Hall of St. Mary’s Cathedral.

The follow-up synod focuses on ten key themes: Missionary Synodal Local Church, Church Administration, Digital Environment and Mission, Faith Formation, Education, Priestly and Religious Life, Safeguarding Policy, Social-Pastoral Development, Ecclesial Movement, and Family.

The discussions are conducted through the Synodal Method of “Conversation in Spirit,” which emphasizes collective discernment through listening, reflection, prayer, discussion, and decision-making.

According to Fr. Hyginus Myint Soe, the main facilitator of the event, the process involves three steps: sharing experiences, prayerful silence, and participants reflecting on what they have heard.

The follow-up synod aims to renew the entire Archdiocese by implementing necessary changes and fostering development through a six-day process of spiritual listening.

Each session includes a 20-minute input for each topic, followed by 30 minutes of prayerful reflection before the Blessed Sacrament and group discussions using the synodal method.
