The King of Thailand has extended congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his election as the 267th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a formal message sent from Bangkok to Vatican City on May 8, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua praised the new Pope’s evident faith, noble spirit, and unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalized, calling his ascension “a source of happiness, peace, and joy to the world — among Christians and non-Christians alike.”
“On behalf of the Thai people,” His Majesty wrote, “I respectfully present my best wishes. May His Holiness enjoy good health, strong physical and mental strength, and a long and prosperous life.”
The King expressed admiration for Pope Leo XIV’s longstanding dedication to public service and his deep understanding of global poverty, saying these qualities have prepared him to be a moral leader in troubled times.
Highlighting Thailand’s commitment to interreligious harmony, the King noted: “Thailand, a society where the majority of the population is Buddhist, is deeply grateful for His Holiness’s commitment to building bridges of understanding and interaction.”
He affirmed that such efforts have long strengthened mutual respect among the Kingdom’s diverse faith communities.
The royal message concluded with a prayerful wish: “May His Holiness continue to be a beacon of faith, hope, and compassion for the world community forever.”
