Jakarta archbishop urges Catholic entrepreneurs to build faith-rooted community

Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo of Jakarta has called on Catholic professionals and entrepreneurs to deepen their sense of community rooted in faith, rather than functioning merely as a formal organization.

During a Eucharistic celebration held Saturday for the inauguration of the new board of PUKAT KAJ—short for Profesional dan Usahawan Katolik Keuskupan Agung Jakarta—Cardinal Suharyo emphasized the importance of spiritual vitality in Catholic leadership and service.

“An organization is built on statutes and bylaws. A community, on the other hand, is moved by what I call a spiritual vitality—a force that breathes life into everything we do,” he said in his homily.

He reminded the group that their gathering for the Eucharist was not a formality but a moment to reconnect with the life-giving spirit of Christ.

Drawing from salvation history, the Cardinal reflected on how God’s promise was fulfilled through the Incarnation of Christ.

Highlighting the group’s outreach efforts, the Cardinal praised PUKAT KAJ’s contributions to the archdiocese through initiatives such as its annual Christmas Concert and the “RUN4U” charity sports event.

“The proceeds from these events are expressions of compassion and solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need,” he said.

PUKAT KAJ is currently preparing for this year’s RUN4U, set for early June, which has already drawn more than 4,000 registered participants. Cardinal Suharyo expressed hope that the group’s efforts would inspire other PUKAT chapters across Indonesia to emulate its example of service and unity.

During the Mass, Cardinal Suharyo officially installed Reymund Levy as the new Chairperson of PUKAT KAJ for the 2025–2027 term.

In his inaugural speech, Levy reflected on his decade-long involvement with the group and acknowledged both the challenges and the moments of grace that came with it.

“But we always found a way to reconcile, to come back together and focus on our shared dreams for the common good,” Levy said, recalling past tensions and disagreements within the organization.

He also extended gratitude to outgoing board members and key mentors, including Mrs. Pinneke Sutandi, for their leadership and support throughout the years.
