At Chrism Mass, Cardinal Bo apologizes for leadership failures, honors church workers

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo publicly acknowledged his leadership shortcomings and asked for forgiveness during the Chrism Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Yangon, in a homily that also honored Church leaders and communities across Myanmar.

“I acknowledge that my leadership has often fallen short, and I sincerely apologize for not fully embodying the spirit of servant leadership,” said the cardinal.

The Mass, held on Holy Thursday, brought together clergy, religious, and lay leaders for the blessing of sacramental oils and the renewal of priestly promises. Cardinal Bo structured his homily into two parts: ten expressions of gratitude and ten apologies.

He thanked the Holy Trinity “for the endless blessings, guidance, strength and being able to call Abba,” and honored the Virgin Mary as “a spiritual mother, honored and venerated through the ages under many beautiful titles.”

Cardinal Bo also recognized Pope Francis “for his transformative, servant leadership and for his constant prayers and support for Myanmar, reminding the world of its struggles.”

He acknowledged the support of the Apostolic Nunciature, fellow bishops, priests, religious congregations, lay movements, donors, and the wider Catholic faithful.

“I am truly thankful to the Faithful for your enduring prayers and unwavering faith,” he said. “Especially in these challenging and complex times, you have approached the Blessed Sacrament to pray for the peace of our country, for Pope, for priests, religious men and women.”

In his words of apology, he addressed criticism directed at some clergy. “Although many of you have faithfully and joyfully dedicated your lives to the Church, criticism has arisen due to the actions of a few who have struggled with celibacy, style of living, and drinking. I sincerely apologize for their shortcomings. We do not consider them bad, but rather weak.”

He also admitted that efforts toward synodality were lacking. “In decision making, we have not always listened to everyone as we should.”

“I stand before God, who alone knows both my external sins and internal sins. I am truly sorry and I sincerely apologize,” Cardinal Bo said. “God is never tired of forgiving.”
