Indian bishops call for vigilance and unity after deadly Red Fort bombing

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has urged the country to remain vigilant and united after a car bomb exploded near New Delhi’s Red Fort on Nov. 10.

The prelates expressed “deep sorrow at the deaths of (eight) innocent people and for the injured,” and invited the faithful “to keep vigil and pray” as tensions rise following a string of security incidents.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are experiencing immense pain at this time. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the CBCI said in its statement, released as authorities expanded a nationwide investigation.

The bishops called on citizens across India to “remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police without delay,” stressing that national unity is essential in confronting the threat of terrorism.

Parish priests were likewise asked to “inform the competent authorities about any suspicious activity or abandoned objects in or near church premises.”

“Let us remain united as one community; let us maintain peace and work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. Let us continue to pray for peace and security in our beloved nation,” the statement concluded.

Their appeal comes as police intensify operations linked to the bombing, which struck near the 17th-century Red Fort, a symbol of Indian nationhood and the site of Independence Day speeches each August 15.

Investigators have opened a terrorism case, granting broader powers of arrest and detention. At least five suspects have been arrested in Pulwama district in southern Kashmir.

Police also dismantled “a suspected terrorist cell” in Faridabad, on the outskirts of New Delhi, arresting seven additional militants and seizing weapons and large amounts of explosive-making materials.

Indian media reported that investigators are examining possible links between the Red Fort attack and tensions in Kashmir. Authorities are also monitoring regional fallout after another explosion occurred on November 11 outside a court in Islamabad.

The two incidents have further inflamed political tensions between India and Pakistan, with both sides trading accusations of involvement or complicity.
