More than 300 cancer patients gathered at Phan Thôn Parish Church in Vietnam’s Vinh Diocese on Dec. 21 for a Christmas celebration organized by the diocesan Pastoral Care for Patients ministry.
The event brought together patients, volunteers, medical professionals, and members of the diocesan pastoral committee for patients. It was held at Phan Thôn Parish, located in the central Vietnamese diocese.
Bishop Anphong Nguyễn Hữu Long attended the gathering along with Father Carôlô Vũ Huề, head of the diocesan Pastoral Care for Patients Committee, and Father Phanxicô Xaviê Phan Văn Dương, parish priest of Phan Thôn. Several priests and religious sisters from different congregations in the diocese also took part.
During the visit, the bishop personally met with each patient, offering encouragement and presenting spiritual gifts.
Despite the pain associated with their illness, many patients were seen smiling, which organizers said reflected the consolation they received through the bishop’s presence and personal attention.
The Christmas celebration was brief but left a strong impression on participants, particularly those who do not share the Catholic faith.
Attendees listened to the Christmas story, watched cultural performances, and shared food prepared by priests, religious sisters, and volunteers.
Organizers said the gathering created space for participants to sit together, share experiences, and offer mutual comfort.
They expressed hope that the Christmas story of the Infant Jesus in Bethlehem would continue to be carried forward through ongoing visits, encounters, and mutual support, especially for those who are suffering.
