Pope Francis names third auxiliary bishop of Colombo

Pope Francis appointed a 53-year-old priest as new auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo in Sri Lanka on July 13.

Father Anton Ranjith Pillainayagam, who was ordained priest on Sept. 16, 2000, will installed as the third auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese.

He was also elected titular bishop of Materiana.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith heads the archdiocese with Maxwell Silva and JD Anthony Jayakody as auxiliary prelates, who were appointed in 2011 and 2018, respectively.




Father Pillainayagam currently serves as vice rector of St. Joseph’s College in Colombo and director of the Tamil Theologate.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1966, in Jaffna, northern Sri Lanka, and completed primary and secondary studies in Colombo and Jaffna.

He studied philosophy at St. Francis Xavier Major Seminary in Jaffna and theology at the National Seminary of Kandy.
