Caritas Bangladesh holds online prayer service for peace in Ukraine

Catholics from all over Bangladesh joined the online event, which was the local Church's response to the call of Pope Francis for prayers

Caritas Bangladesh, the social action arm of the Catholic Church in the country, held a special prayer service for peace in Ukraine and Russia on Wednesday, March 2.

Catholics from all over Bangladesh joined the online event, which was the local Church’s response to the call of Pope Francis for prayers.

“In the life of people at present, peace has become a great demand. Because of wars in different parts of the world, people are fleeing their homes,” said Bishop James Romen Boiragi of Khulna, president of Caritas Bangladesh.

“Today, we expect people all over the world to realize this and change our minds,” said the prelate in his address during the event. “We can accept each other as brothers and sisters. May we all be people of peace,” he said.

Bishop Gervas Rozario of the Diocese Rajshahi said he is “very broken-hearted” over the situation in Ukraine where people are “being killed in an unjust war.”

“I pray that those who are fleeing the horrors of war will be able to rely on their Creator and be safe even in these difficult times,” said the bishop.

James Gomes, program director of Caritas Bangladesh, noted that “the world is in turmoil” during the pandemic, but “no well-meaning person wanted to see such a war.”

He said the Russian aggression did not only disrupt the peace of Ukraine but has also “negative effects” around the world.

“So let us pray for an end to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia,” said Gomes.
