Close to a hundred thousand devotees of the Black Nazarene of Manila joined a ‘Walk of Faith’ before dawn on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, a day before the annual observance of the ‘Feast of the Black Nazarene.’

The two-and-a-half hour walk from Luneta Park to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Manila’s Quiapo district was done instead of the traditional ‘Traslacion’ procession due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ‘traslacion’ (literally transfer of the image of the Nazarene), used to be held annually to mark the transfer of the Black Nazarene replica from a chapel outside the old walled city of Manila in 1767.

The religious procession is usually participated by millions of devotees, but has been canceled since 2020 due to the pandemic. (Photos by Jire Carreon)
