Caritas Philippines called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to take decisive steps in addressing crucial national issues during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA).
The organization emphasized the urgency of tackling economic instability, corruption, climate threats, and the education crisis.
Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines, stressed the importance of the President fulfilling his promise to reduce the price of rice to ₱20 (US$0.34) per kilo—a commitment that has yet to be realized.
“Ensuring affordable rice for all Filipinos is crucial for alleviating poverty and enhancing food security,” the prelate said.
He urged the President to outline clear strategies for achieving this goal and to implement agricultural reforms that would support local farmers.
The bishop also called for robust action against corruption and criminal activities, specifically mentioning high-profile cases such as Pharmally and POGO operations, and the controversies involving Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
“Proving his commitment to justice means ensuring that no one is above the law,” he said.
Bishop Bagaforo also urged the Marcos administration to allow the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate extrajudicial killings in the country to restore public trust in the government.
Addressing the climate crisis is another critical area highlighted by Caritas Philippines. Bishop Bagaforo pointed out the vulnerability of the Philippines to climate change and the need for immediate action.
“The Philippines is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, and it is imperative that the President prioritizes climate emergency measures,” said Bagaforo.
“We need robust policies that promote renewable energy programs and halt environmental destruction caused by activities like open-pit mining,” he added.
