Thai Catholic’s Easter journey finds faith beyond doubt and spiritual dryness

A young Thai Catholic professional has shared a deeply personal Easter reflection tracing his struggle with doubt, spiritual exhaustion, and what he describes as God’s “silence,” offering a stark but hopeful account of faith tested and renewed.

In a reflection written on Easter Sunday, April 5, Anupat Maturongpitak, a 35-year-old data scientist from Phitsanulok, recounts what he calls his most spiritually challenging Lent, as he wrestled with fading prayer, inner emptiness, and the fragile line between belief and disbelief, before rediscovering faith through small acts, encounters, and the meaning of Christ’s resurrection.

Affectionately known as “Ten-Ten,” he comes from a devout Catholic family and has long been known for his strong faith and active participation in church life. Yet, in his reflection, he candidly recounts what he describes as his most spiritually challenging Lent.

A Season of Spiritual Emptiness

“For me, this year’s journey has felt the most draining since Lent began,” he wrote, describing a period marked by fatigue, discouragement, and a diminished sense of God’s presence.

Despite years of consistent religious practice, including frequent Mass attendance and regular prayer, Maturongpitak admitted that during the past 40 days, he struggled to maintain even basic spiritual routines.

The experience led him to confront a troubling realization: how fragile the line can be between belief and disbelief.

Yet, even in this apparent distance, he came to recognize what he now sees as a deeper truth: “no matter how far we drift, God continues to seek us and gently draw us back.”

Encounters That Rekindled Faith

Central to his reflection are a series of moments during Holy Week that he describes as “rises” from spiritual desolation.

On Palm Sunday, guidance from a trusted priest helped him rediscover a fundamental message of the Gospel: that Christ’s love extends beyond human weakness and failure. The realization, he said, struck him deeply, offering a renewed sense of hope.

Another turning point came on Holy Wednesday through a simple yet profound encounter. After offering a bottle of cold tea to a weary delivery rider on a hot day, he was unexpectedly moved by the man’s gratitude. What seemed like a small act of kindness became, for him, a moment of spiritual awakening.

“It was not only about giving,” he reflected, “but realizing that in serving others, we too are strengthened.”

A Call to Humility and Reflection

His journey continued on Holy Thursday, when he accepted an unexpected invitation to participate in the traditional foot-washing ritual, a symbol of humility and service.

The experience, which required significant effort to attend, became a powerful reminder of Christ’s unconditional love, even toward those who fail or betray.

On Good Friday, Maturongpitak described a profound moment of self-examination while reflecting on the Passion of Christ.

He saw in the figures surrounding the crucifixion a mirror of human weakness, recognizing that each person, in different ways, can identify with both failure and redemption.

“Good Friday is not only about remembering a historical event,” he wrote, “but about confronting our own brokenness and the need for transformation.”

Rediscovering God in Silence

A recurring theme in his reflection is the experience of God’s silence. Rather than interpreting it as absence, he came to understand it as part of a deeper spiritual process.

Drawing from insights shared by a priest, he noted that moments when God seems hidden can awaken a greater longing and openness within the human heart.

“God’s silence does not mean He is absent,” he wrote. “He may be at work in ways we cannot yet see.”

An Easter of Renewed Faith

By Easter Sunday, Maturongpitak’s journey had come full circle. What began as a season of doubt culminated in a renewed sense of faith and hope.

“The darkness is not the end,” he concluded. “It is the very condition that gives meaning to the light of the resurrection.”

His reflection, marked by honesty and spiritual depth, offers a message that resonates beyond personal experience, inviting readers to see their own struggles as part of a larger journey toward renewal.

As Christians around the world celebrate Easter, his story serves as a timely reminder that even in moments of uncertainty, faith can be rediscovered, often in the most unexpected ways.
