Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick of Seoul expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran South Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki, whom the prelate described as a devout Catholic.
In a statement, the Archbishop of Seoul said he received news of the actor’s passing “with great sorrow and condolences,” describing Ahn as the “nation’s actor” who, over decades, brought “a profound resonance to our society.”
The archbishop recalled Ahn as “an artist who left a clear and lasting mark on the history of Korean cinema,” noting that “through his acting, he offered hope, comfort, and warm happiness to the people.”
“The sincerity he showed in his works has remained in the hearts of many across generations and eras, becoming a bright light in our society,” he said.
The prelate also highlighted the actor’s Catholic faith, describing Ahn as “a devout Catholic who showed consideration for his neighbors and never lost his warm concern for the vulnerable.”
“Through his donations and good works, he shared hope for a society in which we live together,” the archbishop added, saying that such a life “became a precious example to many.”
In closing, Chung said Ahn’s legacy would endure beyond his films. “We will long remember the sincerity and goodness that actor Ahn Sung-ki left behind through his films and his life,” he said.
“I pray that God may grant His great mercy and peace to actor Ahn Sung-ki, and I extend my deepest consolation and solidarity to the bereaved family and to all who loved him,” he added.
