PHOTOS: Seoul archbishop urges renewed priestly mission at Chrism Mass as 2027 youth gathering nears, calls for peace

The Archdiocese of Seoul highlighted priestly unity and mission during its Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, while urging prayers and support for preparations for the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day and for peace.

Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung presided over the liturgy on April 2 at Myeongdong Cathedral, joined by bishops and priests of the diocese, according to the archdiocese.

The Chrism Mass, a central Holy Week liturgy, expresses the communion between the diocesan bishop and clergy. During the Mass, priests renewed their promises, and the Church consecrated the holy oils to be used throughout the year in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and the anointing of the sick.

In his homily, Chung reflected on the meaning of the sacred oils and priesthood, saying, “We who have been anointed by the Holy Spirit all share in the mission of Christ and are called to reveal the ‘fragrance of Christ’ through our lives.”

He also emphasized the need for the attention and prayers of priests in preparing for the 2027 gathering.

The archbishop urged the faithful to pray for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in other parts of the world.

After the Mass, the archdiocese honored priests marking the 60th and 50th anniversaries of their ordination.

Fr. Emmanuel Jung Moo-woong, celebrating his golden jubilee, said, “Though the past 50 years have been full of shortcomings and nothing to boast of, today feels like a special gift from God, as it is an opportunity to begin again with a renewed commitment.”

He asked for prayers that he may remain faithful to God’s will.

The archdiocese also expressed gratitude to priests who have served for decades and called on the faithful to pray that all clergy may live as good shepherds.
