Maryknoll nun who edited China Bridge, Alice Maureen Corr, dies

She was 90 years old and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 63 years

Maryknoll Sister Alice Maureen Corr, former editor of the Holy Spirit Study Centre’s China Bridge column died on February 24 at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, in Maryknoll, New York.

She was 90 years old and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 63 years, according to a report on the Sunday Examiner in Hong Kong.

Sister Corr was born in New York City on Nov. 11, 1932. She worked for the New York Telephone Company for eight years before entering the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation in Maryknoll, on Sept. 2, 1961.



She made her first profession on June 24, 1964, in Topsfield, Massachusetts, and her final vows on July 4, 1971, in Taiwan where she was assigned in 1965.

She worked with young girls in correctional centers in Miaoli and Taipei and was also was involved in parish ministry in Miaoli. She later taught English at the National Taiwan Normal University until 1974.

Sister Corr returned to Maryknoll in 1974 for congregational service and did promotion on the West Coast until 1976.

In 1980, she was supervisor of the English as a Second Language Programme at the Maryknoll Seminary.

From 1985 to 2007, she taught English at several universities in China, most notably Northwest University, Xian, where she was involved in English language programs for 12 years.

Due to age restrictions in China, she retired from teaching in 2007 and later worked at the Holy Spirit Study Centre, where she remained until 2016.

In 2017, Sister Corr returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre to retire.
