Church in Bangladesh honors elderly people

The social action arm of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh marked the International Day for Older Persons with a call to honor the contributions of the elderly in building society.

Caritas Bangladesh organized a procession and a forum aimed at expressing the Catholic community’s respect and admiration for the older generations.

Francis Bepari, the Caritas Regional Director of Barisal, presided over the event and kicked off the discussion. He stressed the significance of acknowledging the elderly’s role in society.

The forum reminded everyone that the elderly are not a burden. They emphasized that today’s youth are tomorrow’s elders and called for a collective commitment to ensure the welfare and respect of the elderly.

They also underscored the untapped reservoir of knowledge and experience that older individuals possess and urged the government to enhance support, including old-age allowances.

Sheikh Jahir Uddin Ahmed, a social welfare officer, said it is a moral responsibility for everyone to recognize the invaluable contributions of the elderly, who have played a pivotal role in building the country.

The Mahilara Union of Gournadi Upazila and the Goila Union of Agailjhara Upazila organized a similar program.
