IN PHOTOS: Philippines’ lantern parade amplifies #NoToJeepneyPhaseout call

Creativity and militancy were at the center of the annual lantern parade at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Campus in Quezon City on Dec. 20.

The spectacle of lights and colors with different lanterns and floats put into the spotlight the current social issues and human rights concerns.

Colleges and organizations combined artistry and activism to highlight various calls including climate justice, the end of political killings, calls for decent jobs and just wages, the call for justice and peace, and the end of Israeli occupation in Palestine territories, among others.

The event also became a platform to amplify the call to oppose the phaseout of traditional jeepneys. Several colleges and organizations built floats in support of the plight of jeepney drivers and operators.

Philippine “jeepneys” are an adaptation of the World War II military jeeps that Filipinos transformed into 20-seater public transport vehicles.

On Dec. 20, transport and commuter rights groups submitted a petition to the Supreme Court, urging the immediate suspension and ultimate annulment of all government directives mandating the consolidation of franchises by December 31.

This directive is part of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which aims to phase out traditional jeepneys.

In 2017, the government introduced that modernization program that aims to develop a modern and environmentally sustainable transport sector.
