Members of the clergy, friends, and relatives gather at San Roque Cathedral in Caloocan City in the Philippine capital region on Dec. 14 for a solemn Thanksgiving Mass honoring Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David.

Pope Francis formally elevated David, the bishop of Kalookan, to the rank of cardinal during the Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of New Cardinals at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on Dec. 7.
