Empowerment and compassion: Cardinal Poola marks Christmas with marginalized groups

Cardinal Poola Anthony of Hyderabad celebrated Christmas with the transgender community of Suraram Colony in Hyderabad, India.

The event, organized by the Hyderabad Archdiocese Social Service Society (HASSS), aimed to convey a message of inclusion and compassion to marginalized groups who often face discrimination and social ostracism

“True Christmas lies in embracing the poor and neglected, offering them acceptance and dignity,” Cardinal Poola said, emphasizing the words of Jesus Christ. “All those who welcome the least welcome me.”

The celebration included distributing certificates to transgender individuals who completed vocational training programs in jute bag-making, providing sewing machines to women from Self-Help Groups, and giving Christmas gifts to all participants.

“This initiative builds upon HASSS’s ongoing efforts to provide alternative livelihoods to the transgender community,” said Fr. Madanu Anthony, Director of HASSS. “Our goal is to empower them and enable them to lead lives of dignity and self-reliance.”

HASSS has been actively involved in offering training programs, establishing sustainable businesses, and creating identity cards for transgender individuals. The organization’s efforts aim to promote equality and self-reliance among marginalized groups.

“This Christmas celebration serves as a powerful testament to the Church’s commitment to inclusivity, spreading the message of love, hope, and dignity for all,” said Cardinal Poola, who is the first Telugu prelate and a member of Vatican’s Dicastery for Integral Human Development.

Members of the transgender community expressed their gratitude for the Church’s support. Preeti Sunanda, a participant, said, “Celebrating Christmas with Cardinal is quite memorable in my life, that will be etched deep in my heart.”

Transgender activist Aruna reflected on the significance of the event: “This inspiring story highlights the importance of embracing diversity and working towards a more inclusive society.”

Father Yeruava Joji, who also participated in the event, praised the initiative: “By celebrating with the transgender community, Cardinal Poola and HASSS have shown that compassion and solidarity can transform lives and build a more just world.”

According to Fr. Madanu Antony, Telangana has 58,000 registered transgender voters, with approximately 3,000-4,000 residing in Hyderabad. This event is part of the Church’s broader mission to support and advocate for these individuals.
