Thai government, Church leaders meet to promote dialogue and coexistence

Thai government leaders on Dec. 19 reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation and “synodality,” emphasizing shared responsibility, unity, and dialogue in strengthening peaceful coexistence within Thailand’s multicultural society.

The assurance was conveyed during a Christmas and New Year visit to Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok, where Archbishop Francis Xavier Vira Arpondratana, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Thailand and archbishop of Bangkok, welcomed Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth and her high-ranking delegation.

Thaiseth, a Muslim, was joined by Prasop Riangngern, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Chaiyapol Suk-iam, director-general of the Department of Religious Affairs, along with other officials.

Church leaders from various Christian denominations also took part in the meeting.

Organizers said the visit marked the first time senior officials from the culture ministry came together at the cathedral for an exchange of views, discussions, and a courtesy call with Church leaders.

The meeting highlighted continued cooperation between the government and religious communities, underscoring the role of faith and dialogue in promoting social harmony and mutual respect in Thailand’s diverse society.
