A survey done by the Right to Food Campaign India revealed what it described as an “alarming” state of food insecurity and economic distress in the country.
According to the result of the study, which was released on February 23, close to 80 percent of those surveyed reported some form of food insecurity.
At least 25 percent reported severe food insecurity for six months in the wake of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
The survey also revealed that more than 60 percent of respondents were unable to eat healthy or nutritious food, or could eat only a few varieties of food in the month preceding the survey.
About 45 percent of respondents also reported that their households ran out of food in the month preceding the conduct of the survey.
A third of the respondents reported they or someone in their household went to bed hungry.
