There were at least 300 attacks on Christians in India in the past nine months, says a report released in Jaipur, capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, on Tuesday, January 18.
Titled “Christians Under Attack in India,” the report lists more than 300 incidents of attacks on Christians in a span of nine months from 2020 to 2021.
The report was released by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, the United Christian Forum, United Against Hate, and the Jaipur Catholic diocese.
“It is sad to see that a community that has been offering its service to everyone in the country, especially the poor and marginalized, has become the target,” said Bishop Oswald Lewis of Jaipur during the launch of the report.
“Such attacks are on increase,” he said, adding that the “inaction of the government encourages” the perpetrators who go unpunished.
“The government must take stern actions against them to preserve the unity and democracy of the country,” said the Catholic prelate.
Bishop Lewis said that India is a country where every religion is respected and their followers have been living together with peace and harmony for centuries.
“But in the past few years, the minority groups have been targeted, especially Christians and Muslims,” he said.
