SIGNIS Malaysia has called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies, warning that continued violence is driving up civilian casualties and forcing communities from their homes.
In a statement released this week, the Catholic communicators’ network urged “Christian communicators and people of goodwill worldwide” to unite in pressing for peace, echoing the appeals of the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, for an end to hostilities and a return to negotiations.
“United in faith and conscience, we call for an immediate end to the war and a sincere commitment to dialogue,” the statement said, stressing the urgency of the situation as civilian casualties rise and communities are displaced.
Citing the Gospel, SIGNIS Malaysia underscored the moral imperative of peace: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” The group warned that escalating violence continues to erode human dignity and deepen divisions across nations.
The organization called on global leaders, particularly those wielding political and military influence, to take concrete steps toward de-escalation, the protection of civilians, and a firm commitment to resolving the conflict through diplomatic means rather than force.
The appeal also reiterated the consistent teaching of the Catholic Church that “war is always a defeat for humanity,” a message frequently emphasized by the Pope in his calls for peace. It stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through justice, reconciliation, and mutual respect among nations.
Expressing solidarity with those affected, SIGNIS Malaysia extended prayers to victims of the conflict, including refugees and displaced families, regardless of nationality, religion, or ethnicity.
The group invited individuals, faith communities, institutions, and civil society organizations around the world to endorse the appeal, which will be presented as a collective moral voice to diplomatic missions and international representatives in Malaysia.
“May our shared voice, though humble, become part of a greater chorus calling the world away from the shadow of war and into the light of peace,” the statement concluded.
SIGNIS is a global network of Catholic media professionals and communicators present in more than 100 countries.
Officially recognized by the Holy See, it promotes Gospel values, human dignity, and social justice through media initiatives, including the SIGNIS Prize awarded at international film festivals. Its mission is to help transform cultures in the light of the Gospel by fostering peace, justice, and reconciliation.
Through its Rome-based service office at the Vatican, the organization also provides technical and pastoral support to Catholic communicators worldwide, reinforcing its role as a key voice in promoting ethical and faith-based communication in today’s global media landscape.
