Onion, a staple of Philippine cuisine, has become more expensive than meat in recent months due to a reported lack of supply in the market. Red and white onions are sold for as high as 600 pesos per kilogram, 50 percent more expensive than pork or beef.
To address the shortage in the market, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Quezon City, in partnership with farmer’s welfare advocacy groups, bought 1.7 tons of onions on Jan. 10, 2023, and sold it at 400 pesos per kilogram. (Photos by Jire Carreon)
