A 61-year-old man opened fire at a popular fresh food market in Bangkok on Monday, killing five people—including four security guards and a female vendor—before taking his own life, according to Thai authorities.
The incident occurred around 12:31 p.m. at the Or Tor Kor Market in the city’s Chatuchak district. Police said the suspect, later identified as Mr. Noi (surname withheld), a former market employee from Nakhon Ratchasima province, carried out the attack using a “gun-type weapon” before committing suicide on a bench inside the market.
Initial reports from local media and police indicated that three security guards and a market vendor were shot dead at the scene. One more security guard, who was initially resuscitated, later died at the hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to six. Three others, including two women, were injured and rushed to Phyathai Phahonyothin Hospital.
CCTV footage reviewed by authorities showed the gunman firing intermittently as he moved through the market. Just before his suicide, he walked past a dried seafood stall, where a female vendor was seen hiding behind a cabinet. The man followed her and fired at close range. In the footage, the woman can be heard pleading, “อย่าทำหนูนะ หนูไม่รู้เรื่อง” (“Please don’t hurt me, I don’t know anything”).
According to a report from Matichon Online, after shooting multiple people, the suspect calmly sat on a chair in the middle of the market and shot himself, becoming the fifth confirmed death at that point. The sixth fatality was confirmed shortly after.
Police said the attack was triggered by a long-standing personal dispute.
“We obtained this information from his wife’s testimony,” said officer Sayam Boonsom, as quoted by Agence France-Presse. Authorities confirmed that the gunman held a grudge against one of the guards.
Or Tor Kor Market is located near Chatuchak Market, one of Bangkok’s most visited tourist destinations.
